CBS Radio Hurting Sans

Howard Stern's jump from CBS to satellite has damaged the company's radio business to the extent that CBS is considering selling off stations. The New York Post reports that "Ratings and revenue figures released yesterday show just how hard hit CBS stations have been since Stern jumped ship to join Sirius Satellite Radio in January. Stern's former flagship New York station, WFNY, known as "Free FM," once held the top spot in the morning drive time but has dropped to No. 22 in the first three months of this year."

Proposed Law Bans MP3 Streaming of Mainstream

Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have introduced S. 2644, dubbed the PERFORM Act, that would restrict music webcasters that play mainstream music artists from using MP3 formats and other formats that are free of digital rights-management software. Currently, webcasters that want to stream major label music are entitled to do so under a statutory license (administered by SoundExchange) set out in section 114(d) of the Copyright Act. So long as they follow the rules and pay a royalty, webcasters can play whatever music they like, using whatever streaming format they like.

Survey Shows Podcasting Ready to Rock; Radio Ready to

ipod_bono.jpgPodcasting is ready to rock, according to a new survey from Rock radio consultants Jacobs Media. The survey reports that of all the new media options available, including satellite radio, Internet streaming, text messaging and video games, the sharpest growth belongs to iPods and similar MP3 players. Furthermore, they found that podcasting is becoming a viable new way to rock. "There's been a lot written and said about how new technology impacts 'old media,'" Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs comments. "Our findings indicate that the iPod (and similar portable devices) has become a pop culture phenomenon, rapidly becoming a dynamic force in the way that music (and other content) is being purchased and consumed."
