Talkcast Sunday night: guest Ross Rubin of NPD &

Filed under: TUAW Business, Podcasts Last week on the talkcast, Christina led a lively discussion of the laptop announcements, the lack of Firewire on the MacBook, and more. You can listen in via the Talkshoe page, or download the show in iTunes / via RSS. Be so kind as to join us tomorrow 10/25 at 10 pm ET for this week's live show, hosted by me and featuring a special guest -- he's a mild-mannered industry analyst by day, a tech columnist by night... our friend Ross Rubin will be joining us, as we delve into the astonishing impact of the iPhone on Apple's bottom line and the wireless market at large. Has our favorite computer company truly gotten past the Mac? You can join the conversation on TalkShoe by using the shiny browser-only client; you can also use the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client that we all know and love. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. You can also listen in on the Talkshoe page or call in on regular phone or VOIP lines: dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *-8. Talk with you then! Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Next talkcast: Parenting with Mac moms &

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iTS, How-tos, Podcasts We had a fun time on the ol' TUAW talkcast last Sunday, with panelists Christina Warren, Dave Caolo, Erica Sadun and reader Brett Peters (yes, the broken iPhone guy). Brett had a sad saga of MacBook Air performance woes to tell -- his machine refused to run on two cores under moderate load, apparently a thermal management feature run amuck, and it's going back to the mothership now (read the details here). We also ran through the iPhone 3G rumors with a coarse-toothed comb. You can download direct, listen in your browser or subscribe to the TalkShoe feed in iTunes. For this coming Sunday's show (4/13), we're going to be talking about parents, kids and the Mac with Dave Caolo and hopefully some special guests. We'd love to get your suggestions and recommendations for the best educational software, kid-friendly peripherals and utilities, art and music tools for tots, and more. If you'd like to contribute your picks and pans, you can comment below or use our handy PBwiki page (you'll need a login, so just comment that you want to help out and I'll send you an invite). If you're wondering how to introduce your tots to computers or whether content filtering/parental controls really work as advertised, call in and we'll talk.
"Podmaps" concept patent sought by

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iTS, iTunes, Podcasts, Apple AppleInsider has uncovered news of an Apple patent application for a software concept called a "podmap," which is more or less what it sounds like -- a series of maps or driving directions accompanied by an audio version of the same, downloadable into a portable media device. The way I understand it, think of it not just as downloadable directions, but also a kind of real-world tour. There is even mention of episodic content delivered via RSS. Like many Apple patents, there's no indication (or even suggestion) that anything like this would ever see the light of day, but it does tell us that Apple is looking at doing more with marrying their hardware with maps software, just like the great improvements we saw in the iPhone's 1.1.3 update. Hardly a surprise, too, that a company so strongly turning towards portable computing is thinking about the needs of portable users. But a cool idea nevertheless, and it also confirms that Apple sees the iTS's podcast model as a strong and easy way of quickly distributing content of all kinds.

Filed under: Podcasts Last week's TUAW Talkcast, recorded live, featured the debut of TUAW's new team members Jason Clarke, Lisa Hoover and Nik Fletcher, and the swan song of our departing colleague David Chartier. It clocks in at 40 minutes and 28 MB. You can pick it up from our RSS & iTunes feeds, via direct download here, or via download and streaming over at Talkshoe. Since we've got a little Apple event tomorrow, we're going to be doing another Wednesday night talkcast on 9/5; since we want extra time to discuss the new goodies, we're moving it up one half-hour to 9 pm ET. Follow the link to Talkshoe for the schedule. For the weeks to come, we are thinking about alternate times and dates for the talkcast, either to allow participants from far-flung timezones or to permit everyone to use free nights and weekends on their cellphones when they call in.

Filed under: Podcasts It's that time of the week again folks - the TUAW Talkcast is once again upon us! Our regular host Michael Rose is taking the week off, so I'll be taking the hosting reigns for the night. Join TUAW bloggers Dave Caolo, Erica "iPhone Pwner" Sadun, Mike Schramm and myself for a discussion on the week's big news, hopefully some live Ask TUAW where we field your questions and yet another trivia contest for a TUAW shirt! After the show is done, we'll open up the lines so everyone can chat before calling it a night. To participate or listen in on our TalkShoe-powered Talkcasts, register (free) at TalkShoe.com. This will give you a pin you can use to call in with a regular or VoIP phone. If you want to text chat with us and other participants, you'll need to download and sign in with their java client as well. If you can't be with us tonight though, don't worry - as usual, we'll provide the recording for download and via our TUAW Podcast feed (RSS and iTunes) within a day or so. It should be another good show tonight, so we hope to see you all there! Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TUAW gets 15 seconds on

Filed under: Internet, Podcasts, Blogs CommandN, the venerable podcast hosted by Amber MacArthur and Mike Lazazzera covering headlines, tips and other tech stuff, cited my Windows Vista is Boot Camp friendly post in episode #60 (iTMS link). They cover the issue with other headlines in the beginning of the show, and Mike catches Amber when feigning interest in trying out Vista on her Mac. Way to keep her on 'er toes, Mike, and thanks to CommandN for our 15 seconds! I, however, am feeling a bit more adventurous, and I have an 'Install Vista on your Intel Mac' how-to post in the works. Dan Pourhadi did Vista on his MBP back in June, but he had to go the nasty route by deleting his EFI partition which, in addition to causing other problems, impairs Boot Camp's ability to reclaim the Windows partition it creates for Mac OS X. I've managed to get this latest build installed cleanly through Boot Camp, and I assure you: no partitions were harmed in the installation of Vista on my MacBook Pro. My how-to post will offer some gotchas to look out for and tips to get things running as smoothly as possible. Stay tuned. Permalink | Email this | Comments
