The developer, Alex Sokirynsky, is now distributing his native podcast stream receiver app via ad hoc distribution. The iPhone development world & the Mac blogosphere (not to mention the mainstream press) is still loudly debating Apple's decision, but not much is being said about the application itself. Alex was kind enough to provide a review copy of Podcaster to TUAW, so we gave the app a workout. Read on for our review of this controversial and useful application. Mahalo has this new thing they do with conferences and special broadcasts where they trim down the video to 60 seconds. That's about to change: announcing the first-ever live audio chatcast from TUAW, via the Talkshoe platform, tomorrow, Thursday 8/2, at 9:30 pm ET (0230 GMT). Our topic is "One Month of iPhone" and we'll be taking some of your questions and comments, audio or text, live during the half-hour show; we might even find the time to give away a couple of genuine TUAW souvenirs to some lucky participants. Thanks again for your patience.] This week's podcast is a screencast of an app that I finally 'get' and have subsequently gone nutty for: Philip Dow's Journler. It's an app very much like Yojimbo, Mori and SOHO Notes in that it's a journal/digital junk drawer for your work and life. For roughly fifteen minutes I cover some of the coolest features in Journler that both grabbed my personal attention and caused me to chose Mr. Dow's excellent app as my new blogging tool of choice for penning most of my TUAW and Download Squad posts. As usual you can pick up a copy of our latest podcast (weighing in at 36MB and 13 minutes on the dot) from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. I'm also please to announce that I finally did some research into why my previous video screencasts weren't iPod-friendly and have fixed the issue. Even though this particular screencast might look a little tiny on a 5G iPod (I captured the entirety of my 1440 x 900 MacBook Pro display, then re-sized to 640 x 398 for this one), you should nevertheless be able to take it with you on that commute you're packing up for. Some of our predictions were right, some were wrong (like all of mine) but it was entertaining and fun to do. Tonight, after the Keynote, we decided to gather round the USB mic once again and reflect upon what Steve, and the many talented people at Apple, hath wrought. Keep in mind that this is a quick and dirty podcast, so the production level isn't high but the content makes up for that. This time around the podcast weighs in at just over 21MB and 23 minutes. Doctors in the UK are warning that using an cell phone, iPod or other portable electronic device in a thunderstorm could lead to lethal lighting shocks. According to a letter in the British Medical Journal, the effects of electrocution are likely to be more severe as the metallic components of phones and portable music players act as a conductor, causing potentially lethal internal injuries. Luckily, odds are that you'll be dating a supermodel (88,000 to 1) before you'll get hit by lightning (576,000 to 1).

It's looking more and more like podcasting will play a big part in the next US presidential election. Politicians are treating bloggers seriously, politicians are podcasting and political sites are adding podcasts to their offerings. An example of this trend is the announcement that Senator John Edwards has signed on to be the keynote speaker at Gnomedex 6, being held in Seattle June 29-July 1st. The senator is a long-standing supporter of technology, including podcasting and blogging, and has pioneered political podcasting, creating both audio and video podcasts.

At the Corporate Podcasting Summit, Dana Gardner, principal analyst of Interarbor Solutions and producer of BriefingsDirect announced their plans to include full-text transcripts of their sponsored podcasts. The announcement reflects the reality that podcasts have to be found to be heard, and that can be difficult without text that can be indexed by search engines. Studies of listener behavior show that they prefer to know a lot about an audio program before downloading and subscribing, said Gardner. A pink iPod Mini, just four inches long, flushed down the toilet at the South Bay College Arts and Sciences building has finally been removed, after clogging pipes for the entire spring semester and leading to thousands of dollars of maintenance work. The iPod was accidentally flushed by a student and got stuck in such a way that maintenance crews could not get it out. They tried to break the iPod into pieces, but that failed. One maintenance worker called the iPod mini "indestructible".

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is calling on all Provincial governments to restrict the use of iPods, cell phones and other electronic devices by novice drivers. "Novice drivers are subject to many restrictions as they learn to drive, such as not driving on four-lane highways and not driving during certain hours," said CAA President David Flewelling. "By also restricting the use of electronic devices, such as cell phones, MP3 players and wireless hand-held devices, they can truly focus on the driving task." "It is also our hope that a preventative measure like this one will create a generation of motorists who recognize the severe implications of driver distractions - and work towards reducing them where they can."
