TUAW Podcast #25:

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Podcasts Now that I'm on the home stretch of my undergrad (just a thesis project left to finish), I'm finally able to stretch my legs into some hobbies I've been meaning to pick up. One such hobby is photography, and since I've been flexing my digital tools, I've quickly become enamored with Aperture, Apple's professional alternative to iPhoto. Even though I am by no means a professional photographer (no laughing at my pictures!), there are a ton of features in Aperture that drew me away from iPhoto, and I thought highlighting some of these tempting tools would be ripe for a TUAW podcast. Aperture, in my opinion, isn't just for the photographers whose lens bags weigh more than most typical household dogs; it offers a wealth of general features for power users, photography enthusiasts and those who need something that lands right at the intersection of iPhoto and Photoshop in terms of both functionality and price. Hence, TUAW Podcast #25 was born. For just over twenty minutes I explore some of Aperture's features that I think appeal to a wide audience. Pick up a copy from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kidcasts: From the Wide To The Wee

Podcasts, which allow viewers to download video material into their iPods to watch at their own convenience, has always been a secret weapon for harassed parents looking for a way to entertain bored and listless children. Think long road trips, or the typical meltdowns at restaurants, doctor's clinics, or grocery lines. Bring out the iPod, and suddenly, the kids have something to do leaving Mommy and Daddy to go about their task without fear of the Tantrum from

Remember when media outlets couldn't seem to figure out podcasts, so they dismissed them? Now that podcasting is rapidly being adopted by mainstream publishers, the technology critics appear to be moving on to abusing vloggers. The Washington Post describes vlogging as the Amateur Hour On Video. That appears to have been too generous for Valleywag, which describes vloggers as self-obsessed, self-righteous, awkward sell-outs.

Nielsen Media Research has announced ambitious plans to support electronic measurement of media use across all platforms, including MP3 players, cellphones, online video and out-of-home TV viewing. The "Anytime Anywhere Media Measurement" (A2/M2) initiative will be based on tracking via portable electronic measurement tools and its Nielsen/NetRatings software. Nielsen plans to start this summer installing and testing software meters with Nielsen/NetRatings technology on the PCs and laptops of small groups of its People Meter sample. It has set a goal of fully deploying the system in the 2007-2008 broadcast season.

PodTech Announces Scoble Hire; Servers Buckle From

PodTech.net was unresponsive for much of the morning yesterday, as word of "Microsoft Geek Blogger" Robert Scoble's move to the company made its way from the blogosphere to mainstream media. PodTech has officially announced Scoble's hiring, revealing that Scoble will be joining the company as Vice President of Media Development. A common question that is popping up regarding Scoble's move is "What's PodTech?" By hiring Scoble, PodTech is moving to quickly change that question to "What's PodTech doing?" I ve seen the power of this new media, and how fast audiences can grow," said Scoble. "Out of all the companies I ve been watching, PodTech.Network is best positioned to take advantage of the rapid growth that I m seeing in this marketplace and I m thrilled to join this team."

Medical Firm Using iPod Videos to Train

SonoSite, a leading manufacturer of mobile ultrasound equipment, announced an initiative today that will allow clinicians to refresh their training in ultrasound-guided procedures and goal-oriented examinations by viewing courses on video iPods. Ultrasound is a dynamic, real time technology. Ideally, physicians should refresh their ultrasound skills with an equally dynamic training tool, said Dr. Price. Focused, well-designed one-to-five minute tutorials can be viewed on an iPod wherever, whenever they are needed, and can bring the physician or medical student up-to-date, on the spot.
