RoverTv Introduces First Hard-Drive-Free, Pocket Size Media

Doghouse Electronics has introduced RoverTv, a portable media recorder and player that records directly from TV without a computer. "RoverTv establishes a new category of handheld TV recorders and players," said RoverTv designer Jim Howard. "We built RoverTv hard-drive-free to streamline it and make it durable. Hard drives are chunky and fragile - they were never made to withstand the day to day handling that's a normal part of enjoying a portable media device," said Howard, noting that RoverTv's Flash drive and SD technology provide unlimited external memory. Built-in software allows easy transfer of video/music content to and from a Mac or PC.
At the Corporate Podcasting Summit, Dana Gardner, principal analyst of Interarbor Solutions and producer of BriefingsDirect announced their plans to include full-text transcripts of their sponsored podcasts. The announcement reflects the reality that podcasts have to be found to be heard, and that can be difficult without text that can be indexed by search engines. Studies of listener behavior show that they prefer to know a lot about an audio program before downloading and subscribing, said Gardner. Contrary to conventional wisdom, giving the audience a chance to peruse a text transcript of a podcast in a blog or on a web site actually prompts more listeners to then opt-in to get the full audio production.

Fluff News: iPods More Popular than Beer with

In case you were wondering, iPods are hotter than even beer drinking among undergraduate college students, according to the latest biannual market research study by Ridgewood, N.J.-based Student Monitor. 73 percent of the 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were "in" -- more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music. This is a big jump since last year's survey, when only 59 percent of students named the iPod as "in," putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities. The only other time beer was dethroned, in the 18 years of the survey, was in 1997, by the Internet, said Eric Weil, a managing partner at Student Monitor.
